Human Design & Career Change: Transcript
HOST: Hi friends & lovers. How are you doing all amongst this madness we call our world. Boy are we experiencing chaos right now - with lots of magicians of chaos busy working overtime fulfilling their mission of breaking down systems and structures.
And while it can feel really tough to witness this discord - politically, geographically, socially, economically - it all serves a purpose. The shadow is essential it's the birthplace of the light.
And since it's all a mirror construct - when we feel affected by something outside of us, especially if it feels like a recurring pattern - we can always bring it back to us - and ask ourselves - where do WE engage in a similar internal dynamic. So if I constantly am surrounded by people who fight - where am I fighting myself? Where do I feed my internal conflict? Perhaps between what I want and what I should be doing? Between freedom & convention? Etc
And what's the most magical path - since we live in a holographic universe - we all contain the full universe within us - and at the same time we are a little cell of the whole universe. So as we heal and accept our internal conflict - we contribute to more peace and acceptance in the universe, and on this planet.
ANYWAY, hahaha today I'm bringing a new fascination of mine - Human design. Now Human design has been around for nearly 40 years, however, personally I've only started studying it recently - and it's even more multilayred and magical than I anticipated it to be.
So while I'm sure I've humbly only scratched the surface - as I infuse more & more Human design into my programs & client work - I've noticed how helpful of a framework this is when we talk career change process & finding a more aligned career.
So whether you're completely new to Human design or have already studied it - today I'd love to show you have to use some of your basic human design information to create your personalised career change strategy.
So real quick, what is Human design?
It's a holistic self-knowledge system. It combines astrology, the Chinese I Ching, Judaic Kabbalah, Vedic philosophy and modern physics.
Human Design was channeled Ra Uru Hu in 1987.
Think of Human Design as your energetic map - consiting of conscious aspects of you - or your personality - and the unconscious aspects - your design. It can reveal how we're naturally designed to interact with the world, make decisions, and find fulfillment. And when it comes to career change? This knowledge is absolute gold.
This whole approach centers around the idea that human beings can be categorised into four distinct "energy types," based on their aura. The four types are: Manifestors, Generators, Projectors, and Reflectors. We also have a 5th type - Manifesting Generator which is more of a hybrid type but generally speaking it's very similar to a generator.
Now each energy type has its corresponding "strategy," a behaviour that is typical of or advised to a certain aura type - for example - projector strategy is to be invited, manifestor strategy - to inform.
Human Design also maps nine energy centers in the body. An individual's bodygraph reveals which of these centers are "defined", meaning that they are consistent and reliable in their functioning - and which are open or undefined - which would indicate where we're most likely to be conditioned & influenced by the others and our environment.
A reminder - this is super high level, so if you're interested hopefully you'll take it upon yourself to research further.
Now before I continue with the episode - if you're a Human Design virgin and have not seen your chart - don't even know your energy type, I'd like to encourage you to first pull up your chart so as I walk you through different types, you know what's relevant for you.
You can go to websites like https://www.myhumandesign.com/ and input your date of birth, time of birth and place of birth, same as astrology. I will also add some of these links to the show notes.
So you'll generate your chart - usually in the notes, they'll show you your type, your strategy AND your authority and other interesting aspects. Let's first chat about your energy type and what it means for your career change and landing an aligned job and then we'll look into authority - which will advise you how to increase your chances of making aligned decisions.
So what does this mean for your career change journey?
Let's get specific & explore how each type can approach career changes in a way that feels natural and flowing.
Let's start with the most popular energy type - our beautiful sunny, energetic:
HOST: Generators & Manifesting Generators
You're designed with consistent life force energy, but here's the key - your energy is meant to be responsive rather than initiating.
Your strategy is to respond, rather than push for change, initiate and control all the time (which again, I understand not all of you can relate to this - mostly because so many of us have been conditioned to lead with our head).
In addition, in your career journey, forcing yourself into a new path without a genuine spark of interest might lead to frustration.
So during your career change process or perhaps even before you know your new direction - put yourself in environments where people, opportunities, resources can find you, then notice what's coming up your way, especially if you have sacral authority - notice what's an ah-ha - I want that and then respond.
Same process if you have several aligned career options and you're considering a new career path, pay attention to your Sacral response - that gut feeling. Does the prospect light you up with an "uh-huh" feeling? That's your body's way of saying yes!
When a Generator or Manifesting Generator feels neutral or experiences that "uh-uh" (or nah-ah) sensation about a potential career opportunity, it means:
- This particular path likely won't provide sustainable energy for them
- Pursuing this direction might lead to frustration (the not-self theme for Generators)
- Their body wisdom is steering them away from something that doesn't align with their authentic design
For example, if a Generator is considering a career in accounting and feels that "uh-uh" resistance or flatness in their gut, it's their Sacral center signaling that this path won't energize them over time. Even if the career seems logical, prestigious, or financially rewarding, the lack of a positive gut response suggests it won't be fulfilling.
This negative response is equally important as the positive "uh-huh" - it helps Generators avoid paths that would drain their energy rather than sustain it. When Generators force themselves to pursue opportunities despite this negative response, they often experience burnout, frustration, and a sense of being trapped.
For Generators and Manifesting Generators, career satisfaction comes when you follow what genuinely energizes you. So testing things out before you fully commit, while again - a strategy that's beneficial for all types, but for your in particular - before making a complete leap, try "testing" potential paths through small experiences, freelance projects, or conversations. This allows your Sacral to respond to the actual experience rather than just the idea of it - so you get better quality data.
If you are a generator or man gen with an emotional authority - the uh-uh - nah-ah will still work but on top of that you also want to give yourself some time for the emotions around the decision to settle before making the final call.
HOST: [Music fades slightly]
Hey beautiful humans, I'm going to quickly interrupt our regular programming for something I'm genuinely excited to share with you.
You know those moments when you're recording a podcast about aligning with your authentic design, and suddenly you realize you should probably tell your listeners about the program you've created that does exactly that? Yeah, this is one of those moments! [light chuckle]
If what we're discussing today is resonating with you – if you're nodding along thinking "YES, I need this kind of guidance for my career transition" – I've created something special.

Okay, announcement is over – now let's get back to our episode. I promise it's worth the wait! And hey, if Human Design has taught me anything, it's that Manifestors need to inform, Projectors need to be invited, but podcasters? We just need to interrupt! [laughs]
[Music returns to normal volume]
HOST: Now, Projectors
If you're a Projector - the psychologists, the analysts, the healers of our planet - you have a wonderfully focused and penetrating energy, but it works differently than the consistent life force of Generators.
Your strategy is to wait for invitation and recognition. This doesn't mean passively waiting and sitting there refreshing your email hahaha! Rather, it's about cultivating your unique perspective and wisdom until the right people naturally recognize your value.
Let me share some practical steps for Projectors navigating career changes:
First, identify your unique genius. What insights do you naturally see that others miss? Projectors have an extraordinary ability to see into people and systems. Maybe you instinctively understand how to optimize workflows, or perhaps you have a gift for seeing someone's potential. This insight is your currency.
Second, create visibility around this genius - but in a way that preserves your energy. Projectors aren't designed for constant output like Generators. Instead of exhausting yourself with endless applications, focus your energy on high-leverage visibility:
- Curate a portfolio that showcases your unique perspective, not just your skills
- Join communities where decision-makers in your desired field gather
- Consider creating targeted content that demonstrates your insights - whether through writing, speaking, or teaching
- Offer free mini-sessions or consultations to people who might become advocates for your work
Third, learn to recognize genuine invitations. Not all opportunities are true invitations. A true invitation recognizes something specific about your gifts. "We need someone to fill this role" is different from "We value your unique perspective on team dynamics and would love your input."
Projectors, you may find that your career transitions happen in surprising ways. Instead of a linear path, you might be invited into roles that didn't even exist before your wisdom was recognized. This is especially true if you have a defined G center, which gives you a fixed identity and direction.
Btw, Not exclusively, but Projectors often excel in consultative or advisory roles where your natural ability to see into systems is recognized and valued. Coaching, consulting, specialized advising, human resources, and systems analysis all leverage your penetrating awareness.
When considering career changes, ask yourself: "Where will my wisdom be recognized?" rather than "Where can I succeed through hard work alone?" Remember that as a Projector, working harder isn't your path to success - being recognized for your wisdom is.
Your authority - whether it's Emotional, Splenic, Self-Projected, or another type - will guide how you evaluate these invitations when they come. Trust this inner knowing, especially when opportunities arise that might seem "too good to be true" - your authority will tell you if they're aligned.
HOST: Manifestors
As a Manifestor considering career changes, here are some powerful strategies aligned with your design:
First, reclaim your authentic power. Manifestors, you are powerful beings who have often been conditioned to downplay your voice, insight, and drive because you've experienced how it made others uncomfortable in the past. Part of your career change journey and reclamation of authenticity will involve embracing and owning your strong energetic signature, the power you have, and the impact you can make. This might feel uncomfortable at first if you've spent years dimming your light.
Second, learn to recognize and trust your initiating impulses. These aren't random urges - they're your design speaking to you. When you feel that creative spark to move in a new direction, honor it. Your impulses come with perfect timing, even if they don't make logical sense to others around you.
Third, create space for your independence. Unlike other types who might benefit from extensive collaboration during career transitions, you need solitude to connect with your initiating energy. Block off uninterrupted time to feel into your next moves without the influence of others' energies and opinions.
Fourth, practice informing strategically. This is crucial for Manifestors in career transitions. Unlike other types, it's important for you to inform your loved ones, current employers, or business partners about upcoming changes. Not to consult them or ask for approval - simply to INFORM. This might sound like: "I wanted to let you know I'm exploring opportunities in a new industry" or "I've decided to launch my own business next quarter." This informing reduces resistance in your path.
Fifth, investigate career paths that honor your need for autonomy and impact. Look for roles where you can:
- Make independent decisions without constant oversight
- Initiate projects and see them through from conception to completion
- Have the freedom to work in bursts of energy rather than steady, consistent output
- Create significant impact through your initiatives
Careers that value your initiating energy rather than trying to control it include entrepreneurship, creative leadership, pioneering roles in emerging fields, independent consulting, or positions where you can lead initiatives with minimal interference. Many Manifestors thrive when they create their own positions or businesses.
And just like with all the other types - your authority will also indicate how you will move through decision making process - emotional manifestors may want to take their sexy time and ride those emotional waves before deciding whereas splenic - when they learn to recognise the guidance of their spleen can move real quick.
HOST: Reflectors
Finally, if you're a Reflector, you're truly unique - making up less than 1% of the population. You have no defined centers in your chart, which means you're here to reflect the health of your environment.
Your strategy is patience - waiting a full lunar cycle (28 days) before making major decisions. This gives you time to experience yourself in different environments and gather wisdom before committing.
Let me share some tangible career change strategies specifically for Reflectors:
First, embrace your lunar decision-making process. Create a dedicated "lunar journal" for career decisions where you track how you feel about potential opportunities over a full 28-day cycle. Notice how your perspective shifts with the moon's phases. You might feel excited about an opportunity during a full moon but see important red flags during the new moon. All of this information is valuable.
Second, assemble a "reflection circle" - a small, diverse group of trusted friends who understand your design (or at least respect your process). Meet with them individually throughout your lunar cycle to discuss career opportunities. Their different energies will help you sample various perspectives, which is essential for your decision-making process.
Third, conduct "environment tests" before committing to a new career path. Since you reflect your environment so powerfully, arrange to spend time in the actual workspace or with the team you'd be joining. Can you shadow someone for a day? Attend team meetings as an observer? Work on a short-term project? Pay careful attention to how you feel in each environment - your body is your most accurate guidance system.
Fourth, negotiate for flexibility in your work arrangements. Reflectors thrive with variety and may need different working conditions than other types. This might look like:
- Hybrid remote/in-office arrangements
- Flexible hours that align with your energy cycles
- The ability to move between different teams or projects
- Sabbaticals or extended time off between intense work periods
Fifth, consider careers that leverage your unique reflective nature. Reflectors excel in roles where sampling different environments is an asset:
- Culture consultants who evaluate workplace health
- User experience researchers who test how different people interact with products
- Mediators who can hold space for multiple perspectives
- Trend analysts who synthesize patterns across different industries
- Event coordinators who create environments for others to thrive in
- Travel writers or critics who evaluate different spaces
One of my reflector clients when she came in to work with me really struggled with professional identity until she realized her gift was their chameleon-like ability to reflect different environments. She found fulfillment in a role that involved evaluating workplace cultures - something only someone with her reflective nature could do so effectively. She now works as a workplace culture consultant, spending a few weeks in each client's environment before delivering insights about the health of the organization.
Another Reflector I worked with created a portfolio career combining several part-time roles that exposed her to different environments throughout her month. This variety kept her energized and allowed her to bring unique cross-industry insights to each role.
Remember that as a Reflector, your career journey may look different from the traditional linear path. Your success isn't measured by climbing a single ladder but by creating a working life that allows you to experience and reflect a variety of healthy environments. When you honor your lunar timing and reflective nature, you'll find career transitions that lead to deep fulfillment and wisdom.
HOST: Now let's chat about your authority
Now In human design different authority - to put it simply is the way we are designed to make decisions. which is btw probably the most relevant to this episode and the career change application.
We often hear advice 'trust your gut,' 'follow your heart,' 'don't think with your emotions,' but this advice isn't actually meant for everyone. It's not correct for every authority.
Not all of us are meant to trust our gut, some of us need to wait for emotional clarity, some of us need to speak and to hear ourselves, while others need to be in the right environment to tune in. We are all deeply unique and individual, and Our Authority is how our body informs us what's best when making a decision.
Our mind will always question things, it's wired to observe & question - that's its job to get information, but it's job isn't to make decisions. That lies in our body.
I'd like to quickly walk you through these authorities - as that will beautiful set the scene for the rest of the episode and advise I have for your type & authority within the context of career change.
1/ the emotional authority - lies in the defined Solar Plexus (one of the nine centres I've mentioned of) About 50% of us are emotionally defined, therefore 50% of us are emotional authorities. Having emotional authority means that you need emotional clarity before making a decision. This can look different for everyone depending on what channels they have defined, or the frequency and length of their emotional wave, and what the decision is. If you have an emotional authority and feel forced to make a decision in the now, try experimenting with waiting. At the very least give yourself say 5 minutes for small decisions, sleep on it for larger ones, and for more impactful decisions such as relationships and career, give yourself at least a week to come to clarity. If you have an emotional authority, there is no truth in the now and you may never have 100% clarity on the decision you're trying to make, which can make this authority difficult. It's the deepest awareness centre - so when the emotions and the confusion settles - your answers will become clear. Ra said on emotional authorities, to play hard to get and to always wait before making a decision (even if at first it will feel counterintuitive)
2/ Sacral authority - now important to note the only types with Sacral authority are Generators (and Manifesting Generators). This is that gut knowing so many of us are told to follow, that in the moment hell yes and hell no. Sacral beings and Sacral authority are known to respond to things with Sacral sounds, things like uhn uh or uh huh among other grunts and groans. They are often told from a young age to use their words rather than sounds but this is how they know if something is right for them or not.
It's important to tap into and test your Sacral response, you may feel that when you make a decision based on this knowing your body is quite literally pulled in the direction of the thing you are responding to. My clients and I sometimes do sacral sessions - where I'll be asking them specific questions - first easy ones - to calibrate their sacral response - and then more important ones, especially when it comes to career decisions. So you could totally play like that as well.
3/ THE SPLENIC AUTHORITY - If your authority is Splenic then you don't have a defined sacral or emotional solar plexus which mean you are either a Manifestor or Projector. The Spleen is the center of fears, intuition and health and the spleen speaks to you once and moves on, unlike some of the other authorities. This is an in the moment, spontaneous ping or an inner knowing - so it's very very quick and subtle. My human design teacher gave an example of splenic beings like deer in the forest - they are so sensitive to every change and movement in their environment and can change course very very quickly - splenic beings have the same ability. What's important to note here if you're splenic - this hit will often be followed by fear based questions or just rational heady thoughts. Your job is not to listen once you've gotten direction. Nourishing your body and keeping it healthy is a great way to stay in tune with your spleen. Side note - I'm a splenic manifestor - and can attest to that - I usually very very quickly know - but for the longest time I would question and talk myself out of my knowings - because they would often make no sense. So I've been in the process of deconditioning and not allowing my mind make my decisions - but rather let the spleen show me and then use the mind to decide on the best strategy - so mind helps me with HOW but spleen shows the WHAT.
Now these 3 - emotional, sacral and splenic are probably amongst the most common authorities. now we also have
4/ THE EGO AUTHORITIES Ego Manifested If you have an ego manifested authority this means you have your Will/Heart Center connected to your throat, no sacral, emotional, or splenic connections to the throat. it's very important to listen to what you're saying in the moment, listen to what comes out of you through your voice. As with all authorities it's so important to get out of your head and into your authority, you won't find the answers you're looking for in your head. When you have this authority you are a Manifestor, so don't try to control what's coming out of you, just listen to it. Your heart will speak the truth. Ego Projected If you have this authority you are a Projector, with your Heart Center connected to your G Center. If you have this authority waiting for the invitation is crucial to making the correct decision for you, you need the people in your life to come and invite you to things. This is a rare authority and because it's coming from the Heart Center, which is a motor, you either will have the will to do something or not. When you are following your strategy you have a powerful ability to transform and lead.
5/ THE SELF PROJECTED AUTHORITY If you are a self projected Projector then you have your G Center connected to your throat and you need to hear yourself speaking out loud to make decisions. It's important for you to have safe people in your community that you can bounce your thoughts off of so you can listen to what you're saying. It's important to have safe people who understand your boundaries and to understand that you just need a safe space to hear yourself speak. That's how you make the correct decisions for yourself. You can also speak out loud to your phone and record or journal, anything that gets things out of your mind will help you gain clarity of what the correct decision is for you. This is a very in the moment authority, listen to what you're saying in the moment, that's where your truth lies.
6/ THE ENVIRON(MENTAL) AUTHORITY If you have environmental authority (also known as a Mental Projector), this means that you have either the Head + Ajna defined only or Head + Ajna + Throat defined, with no definition below the throat. This means that your environment is SUPER important for you because you have so much openness below the throat. And while our environments are important to all of us - this is particularly true for you - if your environment is wrong, then the people you are around are wrong.
So following your authority - in this case a projector - to be invited - this will help guide you to make the right decisions for yourself. If the environment is wrong, find a new place that feels right. You are taking in information from all that openness you have in your design. Because you have your Ajna connected to your throat as the only definition in your design, make sure you are paying attention to not get caught up in the mental trip that can come from that. The mind is powerful and wants to question everything, so really feel into the environment you are in to get clarity on the correct decisions for you. Not the head.
And the last but not least
7/ THE LUNAR AUTHORITY This very rare authority is reserved to very rare energy type - the Reflectors who are the only type to have a Lunar authority because they don't have any definition. It's important that they allow a lunar cycle to flow through the transiting authorities to come to the best decision they can. During a Lunar Cycle, usually considered 28 days, the transiting energy will allow the Reflector to feel and sample all the 6 other authorities and in getting information from each authority they can best come to the right decision for them. Of course, if the decision is small it's not realistic to wait 28 days to decide on where you're going for dinner tonight, for example but knowing how important your environment is can be helpful in making decisions like these. If you're out somewhere and the environment or the table doesn't feel right, don't feel any shame in asking to move or going to a different place. There you have it - the 7 authorities or decision making types. So much of our decision making process comes from the not self and conditioned open/undefined centers so we really have to experiment with and work with our Strategy and Authority to understand the best decisions for us.
Therefore you'll often hear human design teachers say - follow your strategy and authority - because when we do - the rest of the more intricate nuances automatically fall into place. Our strategy and authority lead us to alignment. At all times.
Again like I said at the beginning of the episode - this is just a tiny tastier, super high level of human design experiment - but if you just applied this knowledge - this could already completely change your career change experience.
So let me quickly summarise what we covered:
So let me quickly summarize what we've covered: If you're a Generator or Manifesting Generator, remember to respond rather than initiate. Listen for that gut "uh-huh" or "uh-uh" before committing to a path. Test experiences in small ways to see what truly energizes you.
If you're a Projector, focus on being recognized for your wisdom rather than competing. Create visibility around your unique insights and wait for the right invitations. Remember that working harder isn't your path - being seen for your gifts is.
If you're a Manifestor, honor your impulses to initiate and reclaim your natural power. Create space for independence, inform others of your plans (without seeking permission), and look for roles that value your autonomous creative energy.
And if you're a Reflector, embrace your lunar timing by tracking decisions across a full 28-day cycle. Create your reflection circle, test environments before committing, and consider careers that value your unique ability to mirror and evaluate different spaces.
No matter your type, your authority - whether Emotional, Sacral, Splenic, Ego, Self-Projected, Environmental, or Lunar - offers you reliable inner guidance when honored. Trust this inner wisdom rather than your mind's endless questioning.
HOST: The reason why I wanted to share this is because in a world that constantly tells us there's one right way to succeed, to make decisions, to navigate transitions... what a relief it is to discover that we're actually designed differently. That what works for your colleague, your partner, or even your best friend might not be your path to alignment.
I've witnessed so many clients struggle through career changes, pushing against their own nature because they thought that's what they "should" do.
Generators exhausting themselves by initiating when they should be responding. Projectors burning out trying to work harder instead of waiting for invitation and recognition. Manifestors feeling people pleasing and guilty about their independence. Reflectors rushing decisions that needed time.
What I wish for you, more than anything, is to experience what's possible when you flow with your design rather than against it. When you do, career transitions no longer feel like pushing a boulder uphill. They become a dance - sometimes challenging, yes, but with a certain rightness, a certain ease that tells you you're on your path.
I'd love to hear how this information lands with you. Please reach out and share your experiences as you begin to apply your Human Design to your career journey. And if you found value in today's episode, share it with someone who might be struggling with their own career transition.
I loved connecting with you today and wish you a magical week.
